Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the right to question specific decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
