The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies pose an grave risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
