European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
